Doesn’t every house have a nondescript coat closet? Largely ignored and overly stuffed with junk? We did not have plans to renovate our entryway closet, but as luck would have it, we ended up with a spare closet organizer. A certain pregnant lady lacking her usual brain power ordered the wrong size organizer for the nursery closet. (She shall remain nameless.) Fortunately for her, our small coat closet ended up being just the right size!

To be honest, our coat closet wasn’t really that bad which is why it wasn’t all that high on our priority list. It just wasn’t all that cute. But you know us, we can’t resist a little project! So we emptied the closet and our house looked like this for a couple of days.
We ripped out the shelf, patched the walls, and applied a fresh coat of white paint which always does wonders for a small closet!
After a couple of days, we were ready to install the organizer. We used the ClosetMaid Impressions Narrow Closet System in this closet. It fits closets between 48 inches and 108 inches wide. (Two of the non-narrow version live in our kids’ rooms upstairs. They’re the same style but the shelving is wider.)
The closet system comes with three hanging bars but we only used two of them. We also had to cut down the bars a bit to fit (super easy with a miter saw!). (NOTE: If you’re going to install the same closet system, make sure you attach the hanging bars to a stud or to a support plank that is attached to studs because coats are heavy!) Just a little sprucing up before organizing…
A few dog-chewed blankets and old coats didn’t make the cut when reorganizing the closet, but other than that, everything else found a home. It’s crazy how much bigger the closet feels even though there is less hanging space. I’m also pretty proud that I didn’t buy any new organizers, despite my intense urge to go basket shopping.
As always, enjoy these before and afters and see what I mean about how much bigger the closet looks! *Our vacuum has always lived in the closet to the left, but it was busy somewhere else when I took these ‘before’ pictures!
We are planning to DIY a couple of shelves to go above the hanging rods. And if I give in someday, I’d love to buy some larger, matching baskets for the stack of shelves! Baskets are my kryptonite, what can I say? 🙂
Thanks for stopping by! You can see the wider version of this closet system in C’s nursery tour post!
