Home renovations and remodeling can be a daunting task, especially when dealing with substantial amounts of debris from construction projects or large-scale cleanouts. Fortunately, the process of ordering a dumpster is easier than it’s ever been. With Budget Dumpster, all you need is 5 minutes, your comfiest chair, and a computer. We recently rented a 30 yard dumpster from Budget Dumpster and had a fantastic experience! So let’s talk everything you need to know about roll off dumpsters!
What is a roll off dumpster?
A roll-off dumpster is a large, open-top container with wheels that allows it to be easily rolled on and off specialized trucks. These dumpsters are a budget-friendly way to handle large volumes of waste from construction, renovation, and cleanup projects.
What can you put in a dumpster?
One of the most common reason people rent dumpsters is for cleaning out household junk! Think broken chairs, old toys, and rusty pots and pans. If you’re ready to clear out that cluttered basement or garage, it’s time to order a dumpster!
Home renovation churns out huge amounts of construction debris that is typically not allowed in your residential trash can. A dumpster can hold all of your remodeling debris such as drywall, metal, lumber, roofing, flooring, cabinetry and siding. You can even dispose of brick, asphalt, and concrete!
These items may not be allowed in your dumpster depending on your area: appliances, electronics, dirt and yard waste, food/event waste, mattresses and box springs, and aerosol cans.
Do I need a permit to get a dumpster?
Most city authorities will allow you to have a roll-off dumpster in your driveway without a permit, however, some neighborhood HOAs will require special approval.
If your driveway is not accessible or large enough for your dumpster and you need to keep it on the street, that typically requires a permit from your city.
What size dumpster do I need?
Budget Dumpster offers 6 dumpster sizes that are measured in a 3 dimensional unit called cubic yards. Their dumpster sizes include the following: 10 yard, 12 yard, 15 yard, 20 yard, 30 yard, and 40 yard.
In general, small room cleanouts, single room remodeling, and heavy debris clean up (like concrete or bricks), will typically require a smaller dumpster like 10, 12, or 15 yard. If you are working on a larger remodeling job, I would recommend a 20 or 30 yard dumpster. 40 yard dumpsters are great for large scale or long-term projects!
To help you imagine how your debris will fit in a dumpster, let’s picture something… Imagine a cube of dirt that is 3 feet high and 3 feet wide. That is one cubic yard of dirt. But cubic yards are fluid and come in all shapes and sizes. No matter how you shape it or spread it out, you’ll always have one yard of dirt.
So a 10 yard dumpster would hold 10 of your cubic yard dirt cubes!
If you’re more of a visual person, imagine how many king penguins would fit in your debris zone. The graphic below shows each dumpster size with a king penguin to scale.
How much does a dumpster cost?
The average cost of a dumpster is between $300 and $700 but will depend on the size, your location, your rental duration, and weight. Budget Dumpster’s friendly team can help you determine exactly what you need and give you a free quote!
