Wow, Crate and Barrel really does me in sometimes- I love the modern yet cozy look of their decor. A few weeks ago saw a photo of a wooden tree collar that stole my heart but I knew I couldn’t spend $100 on something that went under our tree. So I set out to make my own! It was a journey with lots of fails along the way. But I’ve perfected a method that I wanted to share with you guys!
First, here is a photo of the original on Crate and Barrel’s website…
Stunning! I know! So I set out on a hunt for a base and ended up using this felt tree collar from Target after a lot of cheaper, failed attempts. It’s more than I wanted to spend on a base, but it ended up working super well! It is very unfortunately out of stock (*insert crying emoji here*). Some stores still have the red version, but according to the retail industry, Christmas is already over by mid December. If I see another alternative pop up, I will update this post!
I picked up 11 8ft lengths of pine screen moulding from Menards. They had the lowest price that I could find at about $0.50 per linear foot. I cut 88 pieces, each 11 inches long, with a hack saw. Using a miter saw would be faster, of course, but miter saws aren’t accessible for everyone. The hack saw worked fine! Be sure to cut with the beveled side facing up so that, if the wood splinters as you cut through the moulding, it won’t ruin the visible side.
Applying a generous amount of hot glue, I started attached the trim pieces (bevel side up) on the felt tree collar.
To account for the circle shape, you’ll want to keep the top of the pieces close together and leave a small gap between the bottoms, like so…
And truly, that was it! So simple! I think the final product looks pretty similar to the Crate and Barrel tree collar and it w cost half the price! The collar closes easily still, and the whole thing rolls ups for storage. The felt and hot glue combination ended up being really strong. I tried to pull off a piece to redo it and it would NOT budge.
I you try this DIY, be sure to send me a picture or tag me on Instagram @grovehousereno! I’m there chatting with you guys everyday! Hope your holiday season is cozy!! <3
